History

The history of Château Clou du Pin is closely linked to that of Domaines Fontana, a family passionate about vines and wine for generations. The journey began in 1950, when Huguette and Angelo Fontana, young and ambitious at the time, settled in the small Girondine commune of Gensac. Captivated by the richness of the land, they founded their vineyard and undertook years of hard work, planting vines and building a winery.

Over time, their passion was passed down to their five children, who in turn contributed to the estate’s expansion by acquiring new parcels. Today, this family heritage spans over 300 hectares, with a new generation carrying on the legacy while bringing a touch of modernity and innovation. Their vision is clear: to preserve traditional expertise while embracing a dynamic and forward-thinking approach.

The Vineyard

Located in the commune of Gensac, within the AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, the vineyard of Château Clou du Pinthrives on clay-limestone soil, ideal for the development of Bordeaux grape varieties. Covering 8 hectares, it is planted at a density of 3,000 vines per hectare and is meticulously managed within a sustainable viticulture framework.

The vineyard features a harmonious blend of grape varieties, with 75% Merlot, providing roundness and fruitiness, complemented by 15% Cabernet Franc, adding finesse and elegance, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, which structures the wine and ensures excellent aging potential.

Winemaking & Aging

Each step in the production of Château Clou du Pin is carried out with precision to fully express the potential of its terroir. Mechanical harvesting ensures a fast and efficient collection at optimal ripeness. After complete destemming, the grapes ferment in stainless steel tanks, with carefully controlled temperatures between 28°C and 30°C. Three daily pump-overs are performed to maximize the extraction of aromas and structure, while an extended maceration process helps refine the tannins.

The wine is then aged for six months in stainless steel tanks, preserving the purity of the fruit and the authentic expression of the terroir.

Wine Character

Château Clou du Pin stands out with its deep, intense color and an expressive nose where ripe red fruits blend with spicy notes and a subtle floral touch. On the palate, the attack is smooth and indulgent, supported by a well-structured tannic backbone that provides excellent length. The balance between freshness and power makes it a warm, generous, and enjoyable wine.
