Château Haut-Pougnan
The distinctiveness of Château Haut-Pougnan lies in the quality of its clay-limestone soils and a meticulous artisanal approach. The west-facing slopes and the diversity of grape varieties lend this wine a harmonious and unique character, a true expression of the Entre-Deux-Mers.
History
Established in 1852 in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers, Château Haut-Pougnan is a family estate passed down through generations — from fathers to daughters, then to sons. Nestled on the right bank hillsides of the Garonne, in Saint-Genès-de-Lombaud and Madirac, the estate enjoys excellent exposure and a remarkable terroir. Today, it is managed by Jean-Bernard Guéridon, a passionate winemaker who embodies the subtle balance between winemaking tradition and modern techniques. His vision: to craft wines that are enjoyable, natural, and authentic.
The Vineyard
The white vineyard of Château Haut-Pougnan spans 10 hectares of west-facing slopes, where Sauvignon (70%), Sémillon (25%), and Muscadelle (5%) thrive on soils composed of boulbènes, clay, and limestone. With a planting density of 5,000 vines per hectare and an average vine age of 35 years, the vineyard benefits from optimal growing conditions. Combined with sustainable viticulture and careful attention to each plot, these factors ensure perfectly ripe grapes, expressing finesse and aromatic purity.
Winemaking and Aging
Each plot is vinified separately, following full destemming and a skin maceration of about fifteen hours to enhance aromatic expression. Fermentation takes place at a low temperature (around 15°C) over three weeks to preserve the wine’s freshness. Ageing continues on fine lees for two months, adding richness and complexity. A carefully tested fining process is carried out to best preserve the wine’s balance.
Wine Character
This dry white wine charms with its finesse and expressive bouquet, where notes of citrus, white flowers, and a subtle mineral touch intertwine. On the palate, the attack is lively, followed by a lovely roundness and an elegant finish that leaves a pleasant impression of freshness. A balanced and pleasurable Entre-Deux-Mers, it is ideal as an aperitif or paired with seafood, grilled fish, or light Asian cuisine.
