History
The history of Château La Rose Vosel is part of a family tradition deeply rooted in the Lalande de Pomerol terroir. For three generations, the Champseix family has passionately and expertly cultivated this vineyard, with a clear goal: to let the wine naturally express the delicate, aromatic richness of its original terroir. It all began in 1921, when Martial Champseix, originally from Auvergne, became a wine merchant before fulfilling his dream by acquiring a 21-hectare vineyard on the prestigious Néac terroir.
Together with his wife, Fernande, they breathed new life into the vines and forged the estate’s unique identity. Their son, Jean-Pierre—an avid history enthusiast—took over alongside his wife, Gerharde. Today, it is Michel, Martial’s grandson and an agronomist and oenologist, who continues the tradition. He has undertaken the complete conversion of the vineyard to organic farming, thus carrying on the family’s commitment to environmentally friendly viticulture. His wife, Marion, also an agronomist, supports him in this endeavor, ensuring the estate’s wines remain both consistent and excellent.
The Vineyard
The vineyard of Château La Rose Vosel extends over 21 hectares and benefits from an exceptional terroir. Eighty percent of the vines are planted on the acidic clay soil of the Néac plateau, while twenty percent rest on clay-gravel soil, offering a diversity that favors the flourishing of the grape varieties.
The varietal composition is dominated by Merlot (80%), the emblematic grape of the Right Bank, which imparts elegance and roundness to the wine. It is complemented by 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, contributing structure and aging potential, and 10% Cabernet Franc, adding finesse and aromatic complexity. The average age of the vines is 35 years, ensuring a fine concentration of aromas and an authentic expression of the terroir.
The estate is managed according to organic farming principles, a commitment reflected in rigorous vineyard monitoring and meticulous control of grape ripeness. The grapes are harvested by hand, preserving the integrity of the berries and ensuring a strict selection of the best fruit.
Winemaking & Aging
Winemaking follows a traditional approach, respectful of the fruit and the terroir’s identity. After a manual harvest, the grapes are carefully sorted before being destemmed and placed in vats for fermentation. Controlling the temperature and extraction yields wines of great finesse, combining concentration and elegance.
Aging lasts for 12 months in demi-muids (600-liter French oak barrels), 10% of which are new, providing a subtle woody note without masking the purity of the fruit. This aging method refines the tannins while preserving the wine’s freshness and aromatic complexity.
Wine Character
Château La Rose Vosel stands out for its great aromatic complexity. It reveals enticing aromas of ripe red and black fruits (blackcurrant, cherry, blackberry), enhanced by delicate spicy and floral notes. On the palate, it is balanced, round, and generous, supported by silky tannins and an impressive length.
The expression of the terroir is evident in a persistent and elegant finish, where fruit nuances mingle with subtle woody notes. Its aging potential allows it to evolve harmoniously over the years, gaining in complexity and depth.
