History
The history of Château Petit Faurie Quet is deeply rooted in that of Vignobles Quet, a family venture anchored in the Libourne terroir for several generations. After the First World War, Joseph Virolle and Denise Clermontet, both from farming families, built a thriving wine estate. Their legacy was carried on by their daughter, Josette Virolle, and her husband, René Quet, who inherited and acquired strategic parcels in Saint-Émilion and Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes in 1951.
Despite challenges, including the historic frost of 1956, the family persevered and rebuilt their vineyard with determination. From the 1970s onward, Jean-Claude and Jean-Pierre Quet initiated a shift towards bottling and expanding sales, both in France and internationally. Today, David and Sophie, representing the new generation, ensure the estate’s continuity by adopting eco-friendly viticultural practices and enhancing the global reputation of their wines.
The Vineyard
Located in the commune of Les Artigues-de-Lussac, Château Petit Faurie Quet benefits from an exceptional terroir, composed of sandy soils with a clay-limestone subsoil. This vineyard spans 5.62 hectares, with a planting density of 5,500 vines per hectare.
The vines, averaging 30 years old, are predominantly Merlot (85%), complemented by 15% Cabernet Franc. This grape composition gives the wine aromatic richness and a well-structured profile. The vineyard is cultivated using a sustainable approach, with controlled natural grass cover, green pruning to regulate production, and environmentally respectful integrated pest management. Harvesting is carried out mechanically with rigorous selective sorting, ensuring optimal grape quality.
Winemaking & Aging
At Château Petit Faurie Quet, winemaking combines traditional methods with modern technology to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. The grapes undergo strict selection before being vinified in temperature-controlled tanks, ensuring precise extraction of aromas and tannins. A distinctive feature of this wine is the absence of sulfur during vinification, resulting in a purer and more expressive profile.
The aging process lasts 24 months in French oak barrels, enhancing the wine’s complexity and finesse. This extended maturation in wood allows it to develop an elegant structure and remarkable aging potential.
Wine Character
Château Petit Faurie Quet perfectly embodies the balance and elegance of the great Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines. Its Merlot-dominant blend provides roundness and intense fruitiness, while the Cabernet Franc adds aromatic freshness and a well-defined tannic structure.
On the palate, this wine captivates with its deep color and aromas of ripe red fruits, enhanced by spicy and woody notes. The mouthfeel is full, structured, and velvety, leading to a long and refined finish. It pairs beautifully with grilled red meats, sauced dishes, and aged cheeses.
