Château d'Eyran
Château d’Eyran stands out for its centuries-old history and family management that has endured through the ages. Its commitment to responsible viticulture, combined with an exceptional terroir and meticulous winemaking, makes it a key estate in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. With expertise passed down from generation to generation, it embodies the tradition and excellence of Bordeaux’s great wines.
History
The history of Château d’Eyran dates back more than seven centuries, with the first mentions recorded in 1317, when it belonged to the Lord of Budos. It was rebuilt on the gravelly slopes of Mont d’Eyran in 1626 and later passed to the de Sèze family in 1796 through marriage. Paul-Victor de Sèze, a physician, philosopher, and politician, was the first rector of the Académie de Bordeaux and passed the estate to his son Aurélien, a close associate of George Sand and vice-president of the Assemblée Nationale.
Over the centuries, the château remained in the family, enduring economic crises, conflicts, and the German occupation, which led to the abandonment of the vineyards. It was not until the 1980s that Brigitte and Stéphane Savigneux, with the support of Professor Stanislas de Sèze, began restoring the estate’s vineyards. Since 2015, their son Charles and his wife Fernanda have joined the estate’s management, ensuring the continuity of this family heritage.
The Vineyard
Located in Saint-Médard-d’Eyrans, the vineyard of Château d’Eyran spans 25 hectares of gravelly soils, typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation. This exceptional terroir, composed of sandy gravel and gravel over clay-limestone, imparts remarkable elegance and structure to the wines. With a planting density of 6,600 vines per hectare and an average vine age of 25 years, production is meticulously managed according to sustainable farming principles.
Certified HVE 3, the estate is committed to preserving environmental balance and biodiversity. The hand-harvested grapes ensure an optimal selection, maintaining the highest quality in every vintage.
Winemaking and Aging
Vinification follows a traditional method with a long maceration under strict temperature control. Frequent pump-overs ensure optimal extraction of aromas and tannins, giving the wine complexity and balance. Aging takes place for 12 months in French oak barrels, adding finesse and depth to the cuvées of Château d’Eyran.
