Château Grand Clapeau Olivier
Château Grand Clapeau Olivier is a living testament to the expertise passed down through generations. Its gravelly soil, combined with sustainable vineyard management, allows for the production of a wine that balances power and finesse. The estate has endured many challenges, including the phylloxera crisis in the 19th century, which required replanting vines on more resilient rootstocks. This ability to adapt and its commitment to innovation while respecting tradition make Château Grand Clapeau Olivier a unique estate within the Haut-Médoc appellation.
History
Château Grand Clapeau Olivier is a family estate whose history dates back to the late 19th century. Located in Blanquefort, just 15 kilometers from Bordeaux, it is nestled within the preserved landscape of the Médoc Regional Natural Park. Originally a farm where agriculture and livestock coexisted harmoniously, the property fully specialized in viticulture in 1980.
The estate was founded in the 1850s by Édouard Avril, a public works entrepreneur who contributed to the creation of the Médoc railway line. Several owners succeeded him before the great-grandparents of the current proprietors settled there and developed the vineyard. Today, Pierre Baudinière and his daughters continue this tradition, combining ancestral expertise with modern infrastructure to ensure consistent wine quality.
The estate is recognized for its commitment to environmentally respectful viticulture and holds a Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3 (HVE3) certification. Its reputation extends beyond French borders, with its wines being appreciated in Belgium, Germany, and the United States. Its membership in the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc further underscores its pursuit of excellence.
The Vineyard
The vineyard of Château Grand Clapeau Olivier spans 37 hectares, resting on a gravelly ridge ideal for vine cultivation. The grape varieties are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), complemented by Merlot (43%) and Petit Verdot (3%). With an average vine age of 30 years and a planting density of 6,600 vines per hectare, the estate is committed to maintaining an optimal balance between tradition and innovation.
Each plot is carefully monitored using sustainable viticulture practices. Grape maturity is assessed through sensory, quantitative, and analytical evaluations to ensure an optimal harvest. The grapes are mechanically harvested, guaranteeing maximum efficiency and precision.
Winemaking & Aging
The winemaking process is carefully conducted to extract the full aromatic richness of the Médoc terroir. The must ferments in temperature-controlled tanks, ensuring precise temperature regulation to preserve the wine’s aromas. Maceration is long, lasting about three weeks, allowing for a gentle extraction of tannins and a well-balanced structure.
Aging is divided between tanks and barrels: 50% of the wine rests in tanks, while the other half is aged in oak barrels that have previously held two wines. This method ensures controlled aging, providing excellent aromatic complexity while preserving the fruit.
Wine Character
Château Grand Clapeau Olivier stands out for its elegant and structured profile, characteristic of the great wines of Haut-Médoc. The balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lends it impressive intensity, with aromas of ripe black fruits, blackcurrant, and blackberry, enhanced by subtle woody and spicy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with well-integrated yet silky tannins, offering a long and refined finish.
Its tannic structure and freshness give it excellent aging potential, allowing it to evolve gracefully over the years. It pairs beautifully with red meats, game, and aged cheeses.
