Château Laronde Desormes

One of the strengths of Château Laronde Desormes lies in its exceptional location, close to the Margaux appellation, on palus soils that are uncommon in the region. This unique terroir imparts a distinctive character to the wines, combining finesse and roundness.

Furthermore, the estate’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and its transition to HVE 3 certification reflect a strong desire to blend tradition with modernity. Each cuvée thus embodies a subtle balance between respect for the terroir, ancestral expertise, and innovation.

History

Château Laronde Desormes is rooted in an exceptional terroir in Macau-en-Médoc, at the gateway to the Margaux appellation. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages, a time when Macau, then a bustling port, facilitated trade between Blaye and Bordeaux. This village, rich in viticultural heritage, has witnessed the passing of centuries while maintaining its unbreakable bond with wine culture.

In 1790, the château was in the hands of Madame Laronde, a prominent figure whose story reflects the social context of the time. Accused of making disparaging remarks about the Macau National Guard, she was forced to issue a public apology during the Sunday sermon. This anecdote highlights the estate’s deep connection to its roots and the events that have shaped its identity.

Since 1992, the Tessandier family, the current owners, has passionately continued the estate’s winemaking tradition. For many years, the property was managed by the Tari family, who also oversaw the prestigious Château Giscours, a Third Growth classified in 1855.

The Vineyard

Château Laronde Desormes spans 16 hectares of palus soils, rich in clay, characteristic of terroirs near the Gironde. This soil imparts a distinctive character to the wines, marked by roundness and a well-structured tannic profile.

The vineyard is planted at high density (6,500 vines/ha) with a grape composition dominated by Merlot (70%) and complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (30%). Great care is given to the vines, with sustainable viticulture guiding all practices, combining environmental respect with precise vineyard management. Ripeness control is carried out plot by plot, through both tasting and analysis, to ensure optimal grape quality. Harvesting is mechanical, ensuring a swift and efficient collection.

Currently undergoing conversion to HVE 3 (High Environmental Value) certification, the château is committed to a more sustainable approach, further strengthening its respect for biodiversity and the terroir.

Winemaking & Aging

Once harvested, the grapes are rigorously sorted and undergo total destemming. Fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated concrete vats at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Three pump-overs per day are carried out to extract color, aromas, and tannic structure. The maceration period is long, and racking varies between one and three times depending on tastings conducted during aging.

Château Laronde Desormes Tradition: This wine is aged for 6 months in vats, preserving the fruit’s freshness and the pure expression of the terroir.

Château Laronde Desormes Cuvée: This cuvée undergoes 12 months of aging in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, bringing complexity, finesse, and elegance to the tannins.

Wine Character

Château Laronde Desormes Tradition offers a fruity and approachable wine, dominated by aromas of red and black fruits, with a smooth and well-balanced palate. Its vat fermentation enhances the Merlot’s pure expression, bringing freshness and indulgence.

As for the Cuvée, it stands out for its richness and depth. Barrel aging imparts subtle notes of vanilla, spices, and roasting, which blend harmoniously with black fruits. Its more pronounced tannic structure gives it greater aging potential and a beautiful aromatic complexity.
